Automated Accessibility Testing: How to Catch WCAG Issues Before Your Users Do
Over 1 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability. When your web application isn't accessible, you're excluding a significant portion of your potential users — and increasingly, you're exposing your organization to legal risk. Yet most teams treat accessibility as an afterthought. Missing or Incorrect ARIA Attributes

Setting Up Automated WCAG Testing

Level 2: In the CI Pipeline
Tools like axe-core, Pa11y, or Lighthouse can run automated accessibility scans on every pull request. The scan renders pages in a headless browser, checks against WCAG rules, and fails the build if new violations are introduced.

Level 3: AI-Assisted Scanning
AI-powered accessibility agents go beyond rule-based checking. They can evaluate whether alt text is actually descriptive (not just present), assess whether focus order is logical (not just sequential), and identify patterns that are technically compliant but practically unusable.
AI agents can also generate fix suggestions — not just "missing alt text on line 47" but "this product image should have alt text describing the product name and color, e.g., 'Blue wireless headphones with noise cancellation'."
Prioritizing Remediation
When you first run automated testing on an existing codebase, you'll likely find dozens or hundreds of violations. Don't panic — prioritize by impact:
- Critical (fix immediately): Missing form labels, keyboard traps, content hidden from screen readers but visible on screen
- High (fix this sprint): Color contrast failures, missing alt text on informational images, broken heading hierarchy

Beyond Automation: What Still Needs Human Testing
Automated tools catch roughly 30-50% of WCAG issues. The remaining issues require human evaluation:
- Screen reader experience. Does the page make sense when read linearly? Are dynamic updates announced appropriately?
- Cognitive accessibility. Is the language clear? Are error messages helpful? Is the navigation intuitive?
- Complex interactions. Do drag-and-drop interfaces have keyboard alternatives? Do custom widgets behave as expected with assistive technology?
Schedule manual testing for critical user flows — registration, checkout, key feature interactions — and use automated testing for everything else. The combination provides comprehensive coverage without the cost and timing problems of audit-only approaches.
Making Accessibility Part of Your Culture
The teams that sustain accessibility don't treat it as a separate workstream. They integrate it into how they build software:
- Accessibility criteria in the definition of done for every story
- Automated gates that prevent regressions in CI
- Periodic manual testing of critical user flows
